1 – Preparation
Review the Facts
Document Reasons
Prepare a Script
2 – Location
Private
Don’t use your office, in case the situation gets intense and you need to walk away
3 – Witness
Gives the employee less opportunity to make false statements about what occurred
This should be a manager not directly involved with the employee
4 – Transition
Immediate return of company property
Arrange for removal of employee’s personal belongings
Remind of any non-compete clauses
5 – Final Pay
Know your states regulations. Some require full payment in 24 hours.
6 – Document Discussion
Immediately after meeting, you and the witness should document what happened. Another good reason for a script.
7 – Confidentiality
Do not use this as a lesson to others or to put rumors to rest.
Only those with a legitimate need to know, should be given any details. Otherwise a simple ‘they no longer work for the company’ is sufficient.
Always treat the departing employee with dignity and respect.
