Have you ever wondered what it takes to become one of the ‘Best Places to Work’? This is an honor bestowed by several groups. Even if you aren’t looking for formal acknowledgement, wouldn’t you like for your employees to say your company is the ‘Best Place to Work’? Perhaps you can’t offer on-site daycare or workout facilities or other perks larger companies do, but there’s still a lot a small business can do.
Work-Life Balance / Flex Time – These two concepts are closely related. Work-Life balance is being able to balance your work and personal life equally. A PTO (paid time off) policy that allows employees to use their time in smaller increments is beneficial, but also allowing them flexible time can be more beneficial. This could be a longer lunch one day with extra hours worked another day. Maybe someone needs each Tuesday afternoon off to volunteer at their child’s school, so they work later each day to get their 40 hours in. The work is getting done, but maybe not in the traditional 8:00am – 5:00pm timeframe.
Working Remotely – Allowing employees to work from home occasionally or after hours is a huge perk. While this doesn’t work for every position or industry, when it can work give it a try. Several employers have found more work seems to get done by the remote employees.
Shift Swaps – Allow employees with similar jobs to exchange shifts or fill in to handle personal affairs or time off.
Onboarding – Have the owner or other top executive be a part of the onboarding process, if not in person then with an upbeat video about the company and goals.
Award Great Work – Permit you supervisors and managers to provide awards for exceptional work on the spot. Have gift cards on hand to give spontaneously. Don’t wait weeks to award great work.
Recognize Milestones – Celebrate your employee’s birthdays, employment anniversaries, newborns, marriages, etc. Think about free treats for these special days.
