“They didn’t get the report to me.”
“They didn’t get the needed supplies in.”
“They aren’t pulling their weight.”
“My car broke down.”
“My PC was running slow.”
“I had problems with another project.”
And the list goes on and on. Are “they” a problem or is the employee a problem? As a manager, it’s time to find out.
Keep track of examples and note to the employee that they have used the same excuse for missing a deadline 3 times in a month and then get their point of view. If the project depends greatly on another person or department, it could be they aren’t providing needed data. Work with the employee and the other person/department to find a solution.
Develop a plan of action that will reduce failures and excuses. Make sure they understand expectations and impact of missing the deadlines. Encourage the employee to report issues and problems before it’s too late. They should also consider all solutions before presenting the problem.
Ask for their commitment to their work responsibilities, making sure they understand consequent for poor performance.
Lastly follow up regularly. Look for positive change and praise signs of responsible actions.
